A magyar kormány célja, hogy az ország teljesen átjárható legyen elektromos autókkal. Éppen ezért bővítik az elektromos autók vásárlásának támogatását, továbbá adminisztratív könnyítések is életbe lépnek a környezetbarát közlekedés ösztönzése érdekében. Így akár másfél millió forint állami támogatást lehet kapni elektromos autó vásárlására.
A Nemzetgazdasági Minisztérium tájékoztatója szerint a tárca által kidolgozott, illetve kiírt pályázat keretében a kedvezményezetteknek (például magánszemély, egyéni vállalkozó stb.) lehetőségük van vissza nem térítendő támogatás igénylésére elektromos gépkocsi vásárlása esetén. A támogatás mértéke a vásárlás időpontjában érvényes bruttó eladási ár 21 százaléka, de legfeljebb 1,5 millió forint.
Autóvásárlás előtt ajánlott autóhitel kalkulátorok használata, hogy a legkedvezőbb feltételekkel juthassunk hitelhez.
A kormány tervei szerint 80 kilométerenként épülnek nagy teljesítményű egyenáramú elektromos töltőállomások a fontosabb főútvonalak mentén a jövőben és normál töltők a célállomásoknál, az önkormányzatok pedig 100 százalékos, vissza nem térítendő állami támogatással létesíthetnek új elektromos töltőállomásokat, így az ország teljesen átjárható lesz elektromos autókkal. Eddig 535 millió forint értékben 75 önkormányzat 443 töltőpontra vonatkozó pályázatát hagyták jóvá.
A Belügyminisztérium adatai alapján, Magyarországon a közúti közlekedési járműnyilvántartás 2017.07.31-i állapota szerint 829 külső töltésű hibrid elektromos jármű (plug-in hibrid jármű) közlekedik, továbbá 806 növelt hatótávolságú külső töltésű hibrid elektromos jármű, tisztán elektromos autóból pedig 1398 van forgalomban.
